~LaLanya Smith~

Dear John,
Just a note to say hello to you and everyone at Meher. I also wanted to send these pictures. LaLanya is so busy at school I hardly see her anymore. This is why we haven't been able to make it down to see you and Mr. Harrod. We often talk about her days at Meher, she remembers them very well. She also quite often reflects back on those days when writing papers for school. She writes a lot about her experiences there and the profound effect they had on her becoming the adult she is today.

John, you would be so proud of LaLanya (but then she is not only a product of Lonnie and I, but of you and your educational environment). Whenever I'm approached about her, I always include you as part of the reason she is the way she is today. She turned out wonderfully. "Thanks!" Lanya is in her third year at US Irvine and holding a 3.5 gpa. She will graduate June 2005. Her major is Sociology with a minor in Education. She wants to work with children and plans to attend USC graduate school. Lanya received a full 5 year academic scholarship when she graduated from high school to attend any "UC" school she wanted. She chose UC Irvine because she said it reminded her of the small environment she experienced at Meher. She has been chosen as a student for "Who's Who" among college students. Just this week she was interned for "Teach for America" and she was chosen to pledge for "Alpha Kappa Alpha". She worked very hard to achieve all of these appointments.

In closing we did have the chance to visit Sharon and Coach, hopefully one of these days, when she's not so busy, we will be able to make it to see you and Mr. Harrod. Please give him our hello's.

Sincerely,
Madeline Smith
